Have I gone over to the dark side and embraced the diet supplement culture like Bear Grylls? Not in the slightest! I love the product because its a prime example of how you can make millions of pounds (or dollars) by selling what is basically a multi-vitamin and leave you, the consumer, literally flushing your money down the toilet. An article in the Daily Mail on the 4th July 2011 quotes the following… “Juice Plus+ really is a wonder pill in every sense. It literally contains all five portions of your recommended minimum five-a-day, and can be taken on-the-move without any fuss. This means everyone can still get their intake of vital vitamins, regardless of how busy they are.” Fantastic! Just what we’ve been waiting for, our five-a-day needs all wrapped up in a series of pills. But wait there’s more as the manufacturers point to over sixteen different clinical peer reviews to support their product…..all of which were sponsored by the company themselves. I’ll leave you to decide on the credibility of that information. For the most part I’m a pretty open minded guy, and in all the years I’ve been working with nutrition I’ve yet to be convinced that any manufactured product can replace the benefit gained from fresh whole foods. I do however believe that multivitamins etc can enhance your daily nutritional needs but it would be foolish to rely on any product for a balance of vitamins and minerals, hence the term supplement. Now I can’t speak for the quality of the product in terms of its nutritional delivery but lets assume for a minute that it performs in a similar fashion to other supplemental products on the market, a product like Centrum for example. The table below states the nutritional content for a single serving of Juice Plus+ depending on which option you choose. According to the manufacturers instructions you’d take two of these servings per day. Take a minute to look at the RDA percentages. Ok now have a look at the next table (below) which shows the values for the Centrum Performance one-a-day multivitamin.
